Meeting House Wall Plaque
Quakers have been active in Chelmsford for more than three centuries. The Quaker movement was founded in 1642, and Quaker meetings for worship have been held in Chelmsford since 1656, their first brick Meeting House being built in Baddow Road in 1699. This was replaced by a larger Meeting House in 1824 in Duke Street, opposite the railway station.
Anne Knight Plaque
The building today bears two plaques, one (top left) celebrating continuity of Quaker worship in Chelmsford, and one (left) to Anne Knight, a great campaigner against injustice. The sale of this Meeting House funded the building in 1957 of the present Chelmsford Meeting House in Rainsford Road, as well as a new Meeting House in Shenfield for the Brentwood Meeting, which prior to this held meetings at various locations in the area.
